Our Favorite Restaurants in Chania
1. To Antikristo – Best For Authentic Cretan Food and Antikristo
Meeting Zoran, owner of To Antikristo was one of our most heartfelt experiences while exploring Chania restaurants.
Antikristo is a traditional Cretan technique for cooking lamb, goat, and other meats.
This type of cooking style, which means “across the fire” has been practiced since antiquity in Crete.
As part of our quest for authentic food in Crete, we wanted to experience Antikristo and taste the flavors of this age-old cooking technique.
We first met Zoran during our five-month stay in Crete and loved his philosophy and commitment to using only fresh, local ingredients.
In a more recent visit to Chania in the Fall of 2023, we once again sat down to a Greek feast with the most tender cuts of pork belly and flavorful lamb.
Along with the meat, we savored a farm-fresh salad, grilled vegetables, and a surprising twist on Saganaki cheese with sesame grains.
All of this was accompanied by exquisite Cretan wine, making for a truly unforgettable experience.
What we love and have consistently been impressed by is Zoran’s unwavering commitment to authenticity.
He only uses the highest-quality local ingredients ensuring every bite you take reflects Crete’s culinary heritage.
To Antikristo is one of the best restaurants in Chania and our personal top favorite restaurant.
Since Zoran took over ownership of the restaurant in 2017, his dedication to using high-quality local ingredients has been the key to his success.

2. Patsas Agnos Marmaritzakis Restaurant – Best For Local Experience
On our culinary travels, we have found that eating at the local markets is one of the best places to discover the local specialties.
We first discovered Patsas Agnos Marmaritzakis when they were located at the Agora or the main municipal market in Chania.
They now have a new location in the center of Chania in a local part of town.
Regardless of location, Stamatis, the chef, and his wife, Sofia whom we’ve met several times, are focused on traditional Cretan food.
The restaurant’s name means “Tripe” in English which refers to the house speciality known as patsas or tripe.
Typically, the restaurant makes five soups daily, but it is the tripe soup that draws the crowd in from as far away as Athens.
Beyond the soups, the restaurant specialties are lamb cooked in olive oil, snails, stuffed grape leaves, pork belly and celery, and much more.
Additionally, there is a spit rotisserie where you can get slow roasted pork, lamb, chicken and kokoretsi, a lamb offal dish.
What we really liked about the food is that it was always fresh, cooked well, and very flavorful.
For traditional Cretan food where locals eat, see Stamis and Sofia in the city center. They are both very hospitable, and the tasty food comes in generous portions.

3. To Maridaki Fish Restaurant – Best For Fish Soup
To Maridaki or simply Maridaki is the undisputable local favorite for fish and seafood in the old town of Chania.
The owner and chef, Yannis Koumakis, whom we had the pleasure of meeting, opened the restaurant in 2014.
Fish soup is the restaurant’s specialty. Having tasted it several times, we could not disagree when Yannis told us “I make the best fish soup in Chania.”
The name of the restaurant, he told us, is the name of a local fish found in the Mediterranean.
All the fish and seafood is fresh and purchased daily directly from fishermen.
With this in mind, the fish and seafood dishes change seasonally based on availability.
In the winter, red snapper, white bream, grouper and striped mullet are common. Whereas, between October and May, cuttlefish and octopus are prevalent.
Besides the fish soup, we’ve enjoyed cuttlefish, Orzo with seafood, stuffed vegetables, and incredibly tasty wild greens.
Being on a Greek island, you will probably want fish and seafood. If you are in the old town area, To Maridaki is definitely one of the best Chania restaurants for fish and seafood.

4. To Stachi – Best Vegetarian Restaurant
To Stachi is a Slow Food vegetarian restaurant that serves both vegetarian and vegan-friendly dishes.
What we like about To Stachi is their focus on local and traditional cuisine making it available to vegetarians.
The owner Steelios, whom we met, believes in the philosophy of “No harm to the World – people and animals included.”
On our recent Chania trip, we savored delicious and flavorful vegetarian dishes. I had Boureki, a baked dish with layers of potatoes and vegetables.
And Rosemary could not get enough of her baked specialty dish with mushrooms, chestnuts, and lots of veggies.
We finished our meal with an exquisite vegan chocolate cake taking in the outdoor views and relaxed pace.
Note: This restaurant is popular and gets busy. Try to eat outside of peak hours. If you do have to wait, rest assured that the healthy and flavorful food is well worth it.
Located by the Old Port, this is an excellent choice for good fresh local food even if you are not vegetarian.

5. Chrisostomos Restaurant – Best For Cuisine For Skafia, Crete
Chrisostomos restaurant in Old Town Chania opened in 2022. It is a local gem and one of the most highly-rated Chania restaurants for Cretan traditional food.
The restaurant get’s it’s name from owner, Chrisostomos Orfandoudakis, who is from the Skafia region on the island of Crete.
This mountainous region is a UNESCO recognized site and most famous for the Samaria Gorge and proximity to the White Mountains or Lefka Ori.
The menu pays tribute to the traditional dishes from the Skafia region and the island as a whole.
We enjoyed the local vibe and traditional decor at Chrisostomos restaurant. Many of the dishes and the bread are baked in wood ovens.
For dinner, we both choose seafood dishes. Rosemary had cuttle fish with spinach and leeks. While not beautiful to look at, the flavors were outstanding.
I went for the octopus which was served with a side of fava and wild greens or horta. Everything was fresh, tasty and the serving sizes were quite generous.
As we’ve found at many restaurants in Chania, after our meal, we were offered loukamades or Greek donuts for dessert accompanied with a shot of Rakia.
Besides the amazing food, we loved findng this local hidden treasure within the old town area.

Rond trip transportation is provided on this tour and it is truly a memorable experience.
6. Kouzina E.P.E – Best Restaurant For Home Cooked Traditional Dishes
Opened in 2008, Kouzina is a family-owned restaurant specializing in Greek and Mediterranean cuisine.
In the old town, this was one of our favorite restaurants in Chania for tasty traditional food.
Daily specials made with seasonal ingredients are listed on a large blackboard on the interior wall.
Some of the traditional dishes you’ll find include Boureki, fish soup, a variety of vegetable dishes, and lamb and beef stews.
We enjoyed many traditional Cretan foods, especially the eggplant dishes. While in the restaurant, be sure to take a peek at what’s cooking underneath the cooking pots at the front.
While talking to the staff, we learned the restaurant was the first in Chania to offer traditional home cooking.
In fact, Manoulis, the chef and owner, and his mother come every morning to cook the dishes for the day.
The portions are generous, and the prices are reasonable. This is definitely one of the best Chania old-town restaurants for excellent Greek home cooking.

Salis is one of the few exceptional restaurants you will find by the seafront by the port.
Perfectly located by the Venetian shipyards, Salis offers contemporary Cretan food paired with an excellent wine list.
We had the pleasure of meeting Ashfin, the owner of Salis, and also co-owner of Manousakis Winery.
In our discussion, we learned about the vision for Salis which is based on the idea of serving simple, good food and wine.
Afshin described the restaurant’s cuisine “as a modernized version of traditional Cretan food paired with wines that represent Crete.”
The restaurant gets rave reviews for its creative twist on local Cretan dishes. Salis also has one of the most extensive wine lists of any restaurant in Chania.

8. Kapari – Best For Cretan Gourmet Dishes
Kapari, which means capers in English is located near the main bus station in the center of Chania.
Previously, the restaurant was known as Bakaliarakia and owned by Giorgos or George.
We had eaten there several times before and its specialty was fish and chips made with cod along with seafood dishes featuring cuttlefish and octopus.
Unfortunately, Giorgos passed away from Covid. His brother Yannis took ownership of the restaurant, renamed it Kapari, and introduced a new menu.
We loved the authentic Cretan cuisine at Kapari. We found the food to be elevated and sophisticated, yet rooted in the local culinary traditions.
Rosemary enjoyed tender lamb with freshly made homemade fries. And, I savored a traditional Greek pasta dish with chicken, mushrooms, and sundried tomatoes.
On the menu, you’ll also find a fish and chips dish, in memory of George.
The food at Kapari is excellent and you’ll find a wide variety of dishes to choose from.
The portions are generous making it great for sharing starters and main dishes.

9. Evgonia Restaurant – Best For Traditional Cretan Food
This homey, no-frills, uncomplicated restaurant was not far from where we stayed on our first trip to Chania.
The name Evgonia, owner and cook, Nectarius Xanakatebakhe, told us, “means Good Corner” or “Nice Corner” appropriately describing its location.
The restaurant has been around for about 15 years, Nectarius told us. And the cuisine is “traditional homemade food made without compromising quality and ingredients.”
Beyond grilled fish, meat, sausages, and pork dishes, winter seasonal dishes feature beans. While stuffed tomatoes and Boureki are Summer favorites.
Of the many meals we had, his wild mountain greens were some of the tastiest we savored.
The grilled lamb chops are not to be missed, neither are the stewed seafood and meat dishes.
The writing underneath the name on the Evgonia, restaurant sign reads “Toikoudadiko.” And, this is in reference to a little glass of raki available to share with everyone.
The atmosphere is slow and relaxed. Dishes are made to order, allowing you time to enjoy the beautiful outdoor space.
As Nectarius told us on our recent visit, over a glass of raki, on our recent visit, “everyone is welcome to our little corner.”
Consider this as your invitation to visit Evgonia, one of the best Chania restaurants for traditional food.

10. Secret Tastes or Secret Flavors – Best For Farm To Fork Eating
We were thrilled to first discover Secret Tastes after passing it regularly on our way to our apartment.
Intrigued by the name and their focus on traditional Cretan cuisine, we ordered a few dishes to go, before interviewing the chef.
Secret Taste restaurant, which also goes by Secret Flavors is run by Giorgios Vasilakis, a young chef, who opened it in November 2017.
His wife, Mikaela Zouridaki, who helps him at the restaurant from time to time describes it as a “true farm-to-fork restaurant.”
That’s because, she told us, “the ingredients are locally sourced from their family farms.”
Giorgios’s family are farmers from Apokoronas village, where they raise sheep, goats, rabbits, chickens and pigs.
Hence, their meat products, cheese and ice cream are made from the highest quality farm fresh ingredients.
On the other hand, Mikaela’s family comes from a village near Paleochora, an area with an abundance of olive trees and tomatoes.
Similarly, the restaurant uses only the freshest olive oil and vegetables from their family farm.
We’ve enjoyed many meals at Secret Taste. Their lamb was one of our favorites. Zucchini flowers stuffed with rice, moussaka, and the lamb, chicken, and pork dishes are all exceptional.
It was interesting to learn that Giorgios was once a Masterchef candidate.
While he didn’t end up participating because he was too busy, the restaurant has earned a local celebrity following.

11. To Dichalo – The Fork – Best Hidden Gem For Traditional Food
Known mostly to locals, To Dichalo which means “The Fork” in Greek is located on the outskirts of Chania.,
On one of our many walks in around the city, we decided to check out this Cretan restaurant away from the center.
The restaurant is strategically located at the fork of the road, hence the name. It has a nice shaded outdoor seating area.
Curious to try snails, a local specialty from Crete, we ordered the appetizer version which turned out to be enough for a meal.
We really enjoyed the snails lightly prepared with rosemary and olive oil. To go with it, we added the traditional Cretan Dakos salad.
The salad portion was copious. And the flavors bursting in the mouth were a flavorful combination of mizithra cheese, olive oil, and fresh tomatoes.
Even though the restaurant is off the beaten path, it is worth venturing out of the center to find.
Enjoy a delicious meal under the shaded trees at one of the local favorite Chania restaurants.

13. Oasis – Best For Slouvaki Street Food-Style
We first stumbled onto Oasis by chance on our way to the Saturday farmers market on Minos Street.
We noticed a long line of locals patiently waiting to be served. We took note of the location and decided to come back another day before it got too busy.
Oasis is actually a popular street food joint known for their souvlaki. In Crete, pita gyros are also called souvlaki.
Although not a Cretan specialty, this is a Greek food you cannot miss while on the island of Crete.
Made with pork meat cooked on a vertical rotisserie, this delicious sandwich is filled with tomatoes, onions, and tzatziki, a yogurt sauce.
It is then wrapped in a warm, grilled pita bread.
Nikos and Giorgos, the two friendly brothers behind Oasis, invited us to come into their shop to see them making their famous pita gyros.
We learned that Oasis is a long standing shop in Chania, serving pita gyros for more than 54 years.
The secret of their success is said to be in the tzatziki sauce with a hint of oregano.
Locals queue every day to get their delicious pita gyros before Oasis runs out.
We savored these pita gyros, packed with flavor, several times. And, we highly recommend a stop at their shop for the experience.

Thalassino Ageri might be the most picturesque restaurants in Chania and possibly in all of Crete.
Located in Tabakeria, the old quarter of Halepa, the outdoor dining tables by the water offer the best sea views.
Tabakeria means tanneries in Greek and it refers to the factories once used to process leather.

15. Ntounias or Dounias Slow Food Tavern – Best Mountain Experience
The name “Ntounias,” Stelios, the cook and owner, told us as we walked around his farm has multiple meanings.
It pays homage to his family’s heritage and is also representative of the specific bird displayed on the restaurant sign.
Drakona Village, in the mountains outside of Chania, is where we had the privilege of meeting Stelios Trilyrakis.
Dounias restaurant is widely considered as the best Chania restaurant for slow-cooked traditional Cretan food. All the cooking is done with fire and there is no electricity used.
Meals are prepared using traditional wood stoves and the bread baked in wood burning ovens. With no electricity, this Chania restaurant is only opened for lunch and not dinner.
Speaking passionately, Stelios talked about providing “good food,” and “simple food” using hyper local products.
For example, Stelios raises his own animals including cows and pigs which he called by name as we visited them. His farm was filled with seasonal vegetables and traditional Cretan herbs,
The menu, as a result is seasonal, and what he prepares depends on what he has available at that time.
Opened in 1994, Ntounias, also a Gastronomic Center of Cretan Diet, is a reference point for authentic traditional Cretan food.
